What is Madd Leen? Complete Guide

mad leen understanding

Learning the rules of Tajweed is an essential component of mastering the recitation of the Quran. One of the basic rules of Tajweed is the rules of Madd, and their significance is associated with maintaining the fluency of the Quranic recitation.

Madd Leen is one of the easiest and simplest types of Madd because it does not pose a challenge in pronunciation or even require breath control. All it takes is a good understanding of how and when to apply Madd Leen and the difference between it and other kinds of Madd. This is the main topic of this article, so let’s dive in!

What is Madd Leen?

Madd Leen refers to the elongation of the sound of letters (و-ي) when they have sukoon and are preceded by a letter that has a fatha.

Describing this type of Madd as Madd Leen is attributed to the smooth and effortless flow of the sound of Madd in this condition.

What are Madd Leen Letters?

Madd Leen Letters are wow (و) and ya’ (ي) as in the following verses:

  • (ذلك الكتاب لا رَيْب فيه)

In this verse, Madd Leen occurs when the Qari pauses at the word (ريب) since the letter (ر) has a Fatha and the Madd Leen letter (ي) has sukoon.

  • (رحلة الشتاء والصَيْف)

Here, Madd Leen occurs in the word (الصيف) also in the case of pausing since the ya’ is saakin and the preceding letter has Fatha.

How to Apply Madd Leen in Quranic Recitation?

When the word fulfills the three conditions:

  • It has one of the Madd Leen letters (و-ي) with a sukoon
  • The preceding letter has Fatha
  • The reciter pauses on reading this word

The reciter should elongate the Madd Leen letter for 2, 4, 6 Harakah.

Madd Leen is most commonly elongated for 2-4 Harakah, but all three are acceptable.

Examples of Madd Leen in the Quran

  • (الذين يؤمنون بالغَيْب)
  • (لا تأخذه سنة ولا نَوْم)
  • (يغشاه مَوْج)
  • (قال أتستبدلون الذي هو أدنى بالذي هو خَيْر)

Madd Letters vs. Madd Leen Letters

So, what is the difference between typical Madd letters and Madd Leen letters:

  • Madd Letters are (و-ا-ي) while Madd Leen letters are (و-ي)
  • Madd Letters occur in any position of the word; initial, middle or final position while Madd Leen letters only occur in the final position.
  • Madd Leen letters must be Saakin and preceded by a letter with Fatha. However, Madd Letters are preceded by a Harakah that matches the Madd letter, i.e, a Dummah before و, a Kasrah before ي and a Fatha before ا
  • Madd Leen letter is only elongated in case of pausing while typical Madd occurs whether in pausing or continuation.

Examples:

  • (والله أنزل من السماء ماء)

The two words (السماء) and (ماء) have a typical Madd because they have a Fatha before the alif and they fulfill the previously mentioned criteria

  • (والصلح خَيْر)

The word (خير) has Madd Leen because it ends with a ya’ preceded by a fatha and it occurs only in case of pausing.
