15 benefits of memorizing the Quran

“And indeed, the Qur’an is a reminder for the righteous.” ( Al-Haaqqa 69: Verse 48)

The holy Quran is a source of light that has enlightened the heart and mind of a believer. The path of righteousness can be attained by following the Qur’an and Sunnah. And how can we follow the Qur’an? By reflecting on its deep meaning and always carrying it in our heart. To carry the Quran in our heart we must memorize it. As Allah SWT mentioned in Surah Al-Maaida: Verse 15

“O People of the Scripture, there has come to you Our Messenger making clear to you much of what you used to conceal of the Scripture and overlooking much. There has come to you from Allah a light and a clear Book.”

  • Memorizing the Quran makes you earn more and more rewards even in the process of memorizing!

Ibn Mas’ud (RA):

“Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah, he will be credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a ten-fold reward. I do not say that Alif-Lam-Mim is one letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter.”

[Tirmidhi]

Just imagine how many times you will be reciting a letter from the Quran to memorize it!

  • Memorizing the Quran gives high status to the memorizer and make him best among the people

The Messenger of Allah (Peace Be Upon Him) said:

“The best of you is the one who learns the Quran and teaches it.”

  • Memorizing the Quran helps us in attaining higher ranks in Jannah.

Abdullah ibn Amr ibn Al-Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) said:

The one who was devoted to the Quran will be told [on the Day of Resurrection] ‘Recite [the Quran] and ascend [in ranks] as you used to recite when you were in the world. Your rank will be the last verse you recite.” ( Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi)

Memorization of the Quran not only helps in attaining Jannah but also attaining highest ranks in Jannah.

  • Memorizing the Quran helps in being saved from the Hellfire.

    The Prophet (PBUH) said:

“If the Quran was to be gathered inside a vessel (heart), Allah will never punish it with the Hellfire.”

  • Memorizing the Quran helps us in getting away from the torment of grave and also save us from the fitnah of Dajjal

Everyone is aware of the Fitnah of Dajjal and the harsh trials that it will bring.

Imran ibn Husayn reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Nothing between the creation of Adam until the establishment of the Hour is a greater tribulation than the affair of the False Messiah.” (Ṣahih Muslim 2946)

How great is Allah SWT! He has also given us ways to be safe from the Fitnah!

“Whoever memorized the first ten verses from Surah Al-Kahf will be protected from the Dajjal.”

The Prophet  (Peace Be Upon Him) said: “Indeed there is a Surah in the Qur’an of thirty Ayat, which intercedes for a man until he is forgiven. It is [Surah] Tabarak Alladhi Biyadihil-Mulk.”

  • We can gain the company of noble angels by memorizing the Quran.

Attaining the company of angels is one of the honors and memorizing the Quran and reciting it makes angels encircle us.

The Messenger of Allah (Peace Be Upon Him) said:

“Allah has angels who roam the roads looking for those who mention Allah. When they find the same people who mention Allah, they call each other, saying, ‘Come to the object of your pursuit.’

Prophet (PBUH) added:

“Then the angels encircle them with their wings up to the sky of the world…”

  • Memorizing the Quran not only helps us on the Day of Judgement but our parents too.

While we can never repay what our parents did for us, we can try and memorize the Quran so that it can benefit them on the Day of Judgement.

“Mu’aadh al-Juhani narrates that the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him)

said:

“Whosoever recites the Quran and practices upon its injunctions, the reciter’s parents will be given a crown on the day of Judgement. The brightness of that crown will be more intense than the brightness of the sun in your actual house.”

  • You can let your strongest emotion pour as you decide to memorize the Quran.

Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) said:

“There is no envy except in two (types of people): a man whom Allah has taught the Quran so he reads it by night and by the day such that his neighbors hear him and says ‘O I wish I had been given what so-and-so has been given so that I may do what he does. “And a man whom Allah has given wealth so that he spends it in truth, such that a man would say ‘O I wish I had been given what so-and-so has been given so I may do what he does.”

We must always motivate each other to memorize the Quran in any way!

  • Memorizing the Quran is a way to attain Allah’s shade on the Day of Judgement.

Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) said:

“The sun will be brought close to mankind on the Day of Resurrection until its distance from them will be one mile”. Then the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) said “Because of this, people will become submerged in sweat, the severity of which will depend on their deeds. Some will be submerged up to their ankles, others up to their knees, others up to their waists whilst others will be submerged to their jaws.” The Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) then pointed to his mouth.

And just imagine the value of Shade on the Day of Judgement!

The Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) says:

“Seven will be given the shade to on the Day when there’ll be no shade except His’- and he mentioned from amongst them, “a youth who grew up in the worship of Allah.”

This motivates us to memorize and recite the Quran from childhood, to attain the full advantage of our youth.

  • Memorizing the Quran helps us in achieving the ultimate goal of our life.

Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) says:

“Take benefit of five before five: your youth before your old age, your wealth before your sickness, your wealth before your poverty, your free-time before your pre-occupation, and your life before your death.”

  • Memorization of the Quran helps us in increasing our bounties.

Allah SWT mentioned in Surah Fatir and verses 29& 30 that:

“Indeed, those who recite the Book of God, and who duly establish the Prayer, and who spend charitably from what We have provided them, secretly and openly they have hope in a blessed transaction that shall never come to ruin that He may give them their rewards in full and increase them evermore from His bounty. Indeed, He is all-forgiving, ever-thankful.”

  • Memorizing the Quran helps us attaining the status of “People of Allah”

Just imagine the status of “People of Allah”!

 The Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) said,

“Verily, Allah the exalted has people from among mankind, and the people of the Quran are the people of Allah and his chosen ones.”(Ahmed and An Nisai).

  • Memorizing the Quran provide safety from fire and destruction

The Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) said: “Verily, He who does not have anything inside of him of the Quran is like a demolished house.” (At Tirmidhi).

If the Quran is gathered in a body (i.e. a person) Allah will not burn him with

the Fire.” (Al-Baihaqee in Ash-Shu’ab and Al-Albaanee graded it good).

  1. Memorizing the Quran is also a path that leads to Jannah.

Hadrat Ali (R.A)

reports that the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) said:

“Anyone who knows the Quran by heart and follows the lawful and the

prohibited according to it, he will be sent to Heaven by Allah.”

(Tirmidhi). The memoriser of the Quran must follow the lawful and keep away from the prohibited to attain Jannah.

  • Memorizing the Quran helps you in attaining intercession by it on the Day of Judgement.

The prophet (Peace Be Upon Him), “Recite the Quran, for

verily it will come on the Day of Judgement as and intercessor for those who

recite it.”(Muslim)
