إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ
“Saying ‘Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’oon’ is an Arabic expression commonly used by Muslims to convey a sense of submission, patience, and acceptance in the face of adversity, particularly in response to the news of someone’s death. The phrase translates to ‘Surely, we belong to Allah and to Him shall we return.’ Uttering these words serves as a reminder of the transient nature of life and the belief that all beings ultimately belong to and return to Allah. It carries a profound spiritual and emotional impact, encouraging individuals to seek solace in their faith, express resignation to the will of Allah, and find strength in the face of loss or challenges.”

Let’s Understand the Meaning of Innalillahi Wa Innailaihi Rojiun Deeply
“Indeed, to Allah, we belong and shall return to Allah.”
SubhanAllah! Isn’t it the greatest truth? When we ponder upon this sentence deeply, we see two messages. The first half mentions that indeed we belong to Allah. If we reflect on it deeply, we realize that everything belongs to Allah.
He is our Creator and we must follow His each and every command. We should fulfill the purpose of our life by remembering Him all the time and offering our duties faithfully. And when our time will get over, Allah will take us back to Him and we will return to our Creator. This further denotes the second half of the beneficial verse. This also tells us that indeed our return to Allah is a clear truth. As stated in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 46:
“Who are certain that they will meet their Lord and that they will return to Him.”
Occurance of Innalillahi Wa Innailaihi Rojiun in the Quran and Sunnah
This beautiful and strong verse is mentioned in Surah Al-Baqarah. It is part of the 156th verse of the Surah Al-Baqarah.
The 156th verse of Surah Al-Baqarah is:
“Who, when disaster strikes them, say, “Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.”“
Innalillahi Wa Innailaihi Rojiun- in Hadith
Umar bin Abu Salamah narrated from his mother, Umm Salamah, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“When a calamity strikes one of you, then let him say: ‘Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. O Allah, I seek reward with You for my affliction, so reward me for it, and replace it for me with something better (Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun Allahumma Indaka Ahtasibu Musibati Fa’jurni Fiha Wa Abdilni Minha Khair).’” When the time of death was near Abu Salamah, he said: ‘O Allah, replace me for my wife, with better than me.” So when he died, Umm Salamah said: “Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. I seek reward with Allah for my affliction, so reward me for it.” (Jami At-Tirmidhi 3511)
“Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.” (Aal-i-Imraan 3: Verse 185)
Undoubtedly death is the only reality that we all are aware of. None of us know what’s going to happen the next moment, but we all are certain that
one day, whenever Allah wills, our souls will be taken away. And our life in the Hereafter will be eternal. And our life in this world is just a test.
Al-Mustawrid reported:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “What is the world compared to the Hereafter but as a needle dipped into the waters of the ocean?” (al-Mu’jam al-Kabīr 17148)
Indeed, such is the life present in this world. Hence, we should all be aware of the reality that in the Hereafter we will only be assigned the dwelling place that we earned by our deeds in this world. And if we are looking for motivation to do more and more good deeds, take fewer steps towards sins, and control our desire then we should always remember that one day we have to return to our Lord! We should always remember.
This hadith clearly shows the importance of this verse. It acts as a guide as well as a vessel of perseverance in the time of affliction for all Muslims.
When to say- Innalillahi Wa Innailaihi Rojiun
This verse of Surah Al-Baqarah is no less than a Dua. And there are many ways to include this Dua in our life. But the thing that we should all understand is its meaning. It should not just come on the tongue but should also root deep in our hearts. We can say Innalillahi Wa Innailaihi Rojiun:
- When we are afflicted by hardship and sorrows.
As mentioned in the hadith above, saying Innalillahi Wa Innailaihi Rojiun wholeheartedly in distress is a part of Sunnah. Hence, even when we are pricked by a throne or see a brother or sister in hardship, we can say this dua and reflect on its meaning.
- When we hear the news of deceased
It is mustahabb to say these words inna lillahi in Arabic while hearing the news of someone passing away. Indeed, the loss of our near and dear ones is a great affliction. But when we remember Allah at the time of our trial, we are in turn fulfilling the purpose of our lives along with dealing the sadness with lots of Sabr. Indeed, this Dua keeps us strong in difficult times and doesn’t let us get deluded.
- Reciting Inna lillahi wa in allah-e-rajioon as a part of Dhikr.
There is no need to recite this Dua a fixed number of times but we should make it a part of our Dhikr and Azkar daily routine. This way we will be reminded of the ultimate truth and will help us in being on the right path. Also, we will get rewarded every time we say this Dua.
Effects of saying inna lillahi wa inallah-e-raji’oon
This verse is from the Book of Allah. And we all know that every word of the Quran is filled with Allah’s mercy and blessings. The effects of Innalillahi Wa Innailaihi Rojiun include:

- Always remembering Allah SWT, his blessings, and knowing that we belong to Allah SWT only.
- Fighting off depression. When we come to know that this Duniya (world) is a test and the more difficult the test, the better is the reward in the Akhirah if we succeed in it. We realize that nothing matters more to us than Allah SWT and His Will.

- We remember Allah often in our difficult times.
- We develop a strong connection with Allah SWT.
