The Quran is the holy book of Islam revealed on prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by the angel Gabriel AS from 609-632 CE. These revelations were collected and organized as the Quran, the holy book of Allah, which is the source of guidance. Muslims believe that the Quran was revealed in seven different dialects and is taught by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to his companions. Prophet Muhammad said.

“The Quran is recited in seven ways. Do not argue about the Quran, for to argue about the Quran is an act of disbelief.” (Musnad Aḥmad:17199)

This hadith explains that the various Qirat of the Quran was taught by Gabriel AS to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and it was Prophet Muhammaditself that commands the Muslims to recite the Quran in a way that is easy for them (Sahih al-Bukhari 5041). The History Of The Development Of Qirat

The development of the various Qiraat began when the first revelation to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was received from Allah Almighty, and these revelations continued over a period of 23 years. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) learned the Quran directlyfrom the Angel Gabriel AS and then taught this teaching to his companions. The Quran was revealed to the tribe of Quraysh andin Arabic, but at that time the Muslim community consisted of different tribes with differentdialects who had difficulty reading the Quran and then Prophet Muhammad Angel Gabriel AS ask him to teach different Qirat so that reading and understanding the Quran becomes easy forthem.

“Gabriel recited the Qur’an to me in one way. Then I asked him (to read it in another way) and continued to ask him to recite it in other ways, and he recited it in several ways until finally, he recited it in seven different ways.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 4991)

Mutawatir

Mutawatir Qiraat are those that are propagated inthe first three generations (Sahaba, Tabieen, Tab’ Tabieen) The seven Qiraat are considered Mutawatir

1.Qirat Naafi’ Al-Madani

3.Qirat Abu Amr Al-Basri

Reciter Zuban Ibn al-‘Ala’ at-Tamimi al-Mazzini, al-Basriis known asAbu ‘Amr Ibn al-‘Ala’ recited the Quran in this manner.

Transmitters The transmitters of this Qiraat are Abu ‘Amr, Hafs Ibn ‘Umar Ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz al-Baghdadi known asAl-Duriand Abu Shu’ayb, Salih Ibn Ziyad Ibn ‘Abdillah Ibn Isma’il Ibn al-Jarud ar-Riqqi known asAl-Susi

4.Qirat Ibn Aamir Ash -Shami

Reciter Abdullah Ibn ‘Amir Ibn Yazid Ibn Tamim Ibn Rabi’ah al-Yahsibi known asIbn Amir ad-Dimashqirecited the Quran in this manner.

Transmitters The transmitters of this Qiraat are Abu al-Walid, Hisham ibn ‘Ammar Ibn Nusayr Ibn Maysarah al-Salami al-Dimashqi known asHisham,and Abu ‘Amr, ‘Abdullah Ibn Ahmad al-Qurayshi al-Dimashqi known asIbn Dhakwan.

5.Qirat Asim al-Kufi

Reciter Abu Bakr, ‘Aasim Ibn Abi al-Najud al-‘Asadi known asAasim ibn Abi al-Najud recited the Quran in this manner. 7.Qirat Al-Kisaa’i

Mashhur

If the Qiraat is spread in the generation of Tabieen, Tab’ Tabieen, then it is considered as Mashhur and there are three Mashhur Qiraat.

1.Qirat Abu Ja’far Al-Madani Reciter

Yazid Ibn al-Qa’qa’ al-Makhzumi al-Madani, known asAbu Ja’far, recited the Quran in this way.

Transmitters The transmitters of this Qiraat are Abu al-Harith al-Madani known as’Isa Ibn Wardan and Abu ar-Rabi’, Sulayman Ibn Muslim Ibn Jummaz al-Madaniknown asIbn Jummaz.
